Paul Eberwine

Department of Classics

Paul Eberwine is a Ph.D. candidate in the Classics department. His dissertation studies the excessiveness of death in Greek tragedy: its resistance to representation, embodiment, and normative control. By thematizing this excess, tragedy stages death not only as a biological fact for individuals, but as an affect distributed across communities. Tragedy therefore troubles the border between the living and the dead, destabilizing the social ontologies which govern on- and off-stage worlds in the age of the Athenian Empire.

Paul graduated from Yale in 2018 with a B.A. and M.A. in Classics. For the 2022-3 academic year, he is a Gastwissenschaftler at the Humboldt University of Berlin.
