This reading group will convene virtually to discuss both primary and scholarly texts related to art and culture in the long nineteenth century. Each week our group will focus on a different theme and assigned text(s); on occasion, we will also invite select speakers whose research pertains to the theme. Themes will include: artistic collaborations; digital humanities; art and the environment; fragments; nationalism and national identity; new approaches to scholarship; quality and taste; tone; race and color; and suffering. In addition to these themes, we will leave open the possibility of determining future topics as a group based on the individual research interests of our members. This open format will allow us to address questions that arise in the course of our dissertation work as a group and allow for the most inclusive curriculum.
