The general topic of this reading group will delve into the complex histories and legacies of authoritarian regimes and dictatorships in Latin America. Our aim is to examine the affective, cultural, moral, and political impacts of these formations and explore the processes of reconciliation and democratization that have followed. By engaging with a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives, we hope to gain a deeper
understanding of how these histories continue to shape contemporary Latin Americansocieties.
This year, the reading group's specific theme will be the military and the militarization of societies. This theme will guide our exploration of how authoritarian regimes have left enduring marks on Latin America by thinking from the perspective of the military and the long tail of dictatorships in the region. Since the formation of Latin American nation-states, what roles have the military played? How is this protagonism translated across political regimes, and how does it manifest in the present day? How does a militarized authoritarianism impact understandings of democracy, law enforcement, human rights, and citizenship? Throughout the year, we will continually
revisit this theme and its unfoldings, assessing the progress and setbacks in the journey towards reconciliation and democratic consolidation.
